Ramadhaan Part 5

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Things that are to be avoided while Fasting

• It is not permissible for a fasting person to lie, give false witness or statements, backbite, slander or do immoral, indecent or shameful acts.
• It is not permissible for the fasting person to be unjust to anyone, to entertain hatred, malice and enmity against anyone, cast lustful gazes, meet strange women or go to cinema etc. These acts do not invalidate or break the fast, however they are totally disliked and decrease the blessings and rewards of the fast.
• It is also disliked to apply Surma to the eyes while fasting. Similarly it is disliked to do cupping or donating blood while fasting since this may lead to weakness.
• It is Makruuh (disliked) to be excessive in pouring water down the nostrils or gargling while observing the fast.
• While observing the fast it is Makruuh (disliked) to touch or kiss one’s wife with excitement or lust.
• It is Makruuh (disliked) to chew or taste anything while fasting.

Laws relating to 'Itikaaf

‘Itikaaf literally means seclusion and in Islaam it means to seclude oneself to the Masjid in worship in order to achieve the pleasure of Allah (with the clear intention of ‘Itikaaf). ‘Itikaaf in the month of Ramadhan is an emphasized and strong practice of the Prophet (S.A.), who continuously performed ‘Itikaaf of the last ten days of Ramadhan from the year he entered Madinah until he left this world. As such, spending the last ten days of Ramadhan in ‘Itikaaf is a strong and emphasized Sunnah of the Prophet (S.A.)

The last ten days of ‘Itikaaf begins before the sunset of the 20th day of fasting. In other words it begins before the 21st night of Ramadhan and continues until the moon of Shawwaal is sighted. It is therefore necessary for those performing ‘Itikaaf that they should be in the masjid before the sunset of the 20th day of fasting.

Lailatul Qadr - The Night of Power

“We have indeed revealed this (message) on the Night of Power And what will explain to you what is the Night of Power? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. Therein comes down the Angels and the Spirit by Allah’s permission on every errand.” (Quraan, Chapter 97).

Abu Hurairah (R.A.) reports that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.) said, “Whoever stands in prayer and worship on the Night of Power, with complete faith and with sincere hope of gaining reward, all his previous sins are forgiven.” (At-Targhiib from Bukharii and Muslim)

The night (being so great) should be spent diligently in devotion, recitation of the Quraan and supplication. As stated in the above-mentioned Hadith, Allah grants forgiveness of all the previous sins of a person who spends the night in prayer. In another tradition reported by Anas (R.A.) he says, “Once when Ramadhan commenced the Messenger of Allah (S.A.) said, “A month has verily dawned over you wherein lies a night better than a thousand months. Whoever misses such a night has indeed been deprived of all that is good and none is deprived of it, except he who is really unfortunate.” (Ibn Maajah).

Taraawiih

Taraawiih is Sunnah of the Prophet (S.A.) and a highly recommended act of ‘Ibaadah in the month of Ramadhan. It is the Ijmaa’ (consensus) of the Sahaabahs (R.A.) that it consists of twenty Rakaahs.

The time of Taraawiih Salaah begins after ‘Ishaa Salaah. If it is performed before then it is not valid. Taraawiih can be performed before or after the Witr Salaah.

Taking a short break every four Rakaahs of Taraawiih is permissible. During this time it is permissible to be engaged in any form of Tasbiih, Dhikr, or Daruud silently. Even to remain silent is permissible. However it is not proper to make anything binding upon oneself or the Jamaa’ah to be read or recited during this pause.

Ramadhaan Part 4

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Sunnah Acts of Fasting
• It is Sunnah to take Sihri (small meal) in the morning before observing the fast. The Prophet (S.A.) himself said, “Take Sihri for certainly there are blessings in having Sihri”.
• It is more virtuous to delay the Sihri from being very early in the morning. However it is Makruuh (disliked) to delay it to the time when it becomes doubtful of the ending time of Sihri ( i.e. break of dawn).
• It is Sunnah to break the fast immediately after sunset without delay and it is Mustahab (desirable) to recite the Du’aa for breaking the fast. However a person should not be so hasty in breaking his fast so as to do it before the sun has set.

Things which nullify the Fast
• It is not permissible to eat, drink or have sexual relations with one’s spouse while one is observing the fast. Similarly talking oral medication or using nasal sprays and other specific medicines by Asthma patients will all invalidate the fast.
• While performing Ghusl or Wuduu if water mistakenly goes down the throat while being conscious and aware that one is fasting, then the fast is nullified and has to be made up afterwards.
• If medicine is placed in the ear or nose while fasting then the fast is nullified and must be made up afterwards.
• If medication is placed on a wound on the head or stomach and it enters into the head or stomach then the fast is broken and must be made up afterwards.
• If after eating something forgetfully, a person thought that his fast was broken and thereafter ate something intentionally, his fast is nullified and must be made up afterwards.

Things which do not nullify the Fast
• Unconsciousness or illness does not break the fast. However it is permissible to break the fast for medical reasons such as illness etc. In such a case Qadaa is necessary.
• It is Makruuh (disliked) to use toothpaste while fasting since there is a high possibility of the effects entering the throat. If it enters the throat then the fast is broken and Qadaa is necessary.
• By using a Miswak the fast is not broken.
• If while taking a bath water enters the ear then the fast is not broken.
• If saliva enters the throat and is swallowed then the fast is not broken.
• Taking medication by injection does not break the fast.
• The sweet scent of Lobhan, incense, ‘Itr or perfume does not break the fast. However if the smoke of the Lobhan or incense enters the throat by his action then the fast will be broken and Qadaa is necessary.
• The emission of blood or pus from a wound or pimple does not break the fast even if it is a large amount. It is however disliked to cause the emission of blood in a fasting person.

Ramadhaan Part 3

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Virtues of Fasting (Saum)

Fasting is a great act of ‘Ibaadah in Islaam which is not done for any physical or medical reason but solely for the pleasure of Allah. The only purpose for which it should be done is the spiritual development and rewards promised by Allah. If it is done for any other reason then this intention will lack ‘Ikhlaas or sincerity.

In a tradition reported by Abu Hurairah (R.A.) the Messenger of Allah (S.A.) said, “Every action of a man increases in its rewards ten times until seven hundred, but Allah says, except fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give its reward as I desire.” (Muslim).

The Law of Fasting in Ramadhaan

Fasting literally means ‘ to abstain’ and in Islaam it means to abstain from food, drink, sexual relations with one’s wife/husband and all other things which can break the fast, from the break of dawn until sunset with the intention of an act of worship. It is therefore essential that the intention of observing the fast be made by the individual.

Observing the fast of Ramadhan is compulsory on an individual basis and is evident from the Holy Quraan which states, ‘The month of Ramadhan is the month in which the Holy Quraan was sent down, a guidance for mankind and clear signs of guidance and a criterion. So whosoever among you is present in this month, let him observe the fast’. (2:183). The Prophet of Allah (S.A.) said, “Islaam is founded on five pillars- To bear testimony that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger, to establish Salaah, to pay Zakaah, to fast in Ramadhan and Pilgrimage to the house of Allah”. (Bukhaarii, Muslim).

Intention of Fasting

Intention of observing the fast is essential upon an individual since it is through this, the fast becomes an act of worship. Once this intention has been made in the heart it is enough, however it is a good act to say it with the tongue also. The intention for observing the fast should be made from the night (i.e. any time preceding the break of dawn of that specific day).

The Intention for observing the fast can be made in the following words:
Nawaitu an a suuma ghadan lil-laahi Ta’aala.
I intend to fast tomorrow for the sake of Allah.
The Dua that can be recited at the time of breaking the fast is:
Allahumma laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa alaika tawakkaltu wa alaa rezqika aftartu.
O Allah for your sake have I fasted and have believed in you and upon you do I put my trust and with Your Sustenance do I break my fast.

Ramadhaan Part 2

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Virtues of Ramadhaan
Salmaan (R.A.) states that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.) addressed them on the last day of Sha’baan saying: “O people, there comes upon you now a month in which lies a night better than one thousand months. It is a month in which Allah has made compulsory that fasting should be observed by day and has made the ‘standing by night’ a practice. In this month, whosoever draws closer to Allah by any good action, for him shall be such reward as if he had performed a compulsory act at any other time of the year. It is indeed a month of patience and the reward for patience is Paradise.

It is a month of sympathy with one’s fellowmen. It is the month wherein a true believer’s sustenance is increased. Whosoever feeds a fasting person in order to break his fast (at sunset), for him there shall be forgiveness of his sins and emancipation from the fire of Hell, and for him shall be the same rewards as for him (whom he fed) without that person’s reward being diminished in the least. Upon this we said ‘O Messenger of Allah (S.A.), not all of us possess the means whereby we can provide enough for a fasting person to break his fast’. The Messenger of Allah (S.A.) replied, ‘Allah grants the same reward to him who gives a fasting person a single date, or a drink of water or a sip of milk to break his fast. This month the first part of which brings the mercy of Allah, the middle brings His forgiveness and the last part brings emancipation from the fire of Hell.
Whosoever lessens the burden of his servants (bondsmen) in this month, Allah will forgive him and free him from the fire of Hell.

In this blessed month, there are four things you should endeavour to perform in great number, two of which shall be to please your Lord, while the other two shall be those without which you cannot do. Those which shall please your Lord are that you should in great quantity recite the Kalimah ‘Laa ilaaha il-lal-laah’ and make much ‘ Istighfaar’ (seeking Allah’s forgiveness). As for those which you cannot do without, you should beg Allah for entry into Paradise and seek refuge in Him from the fire of Hell.

And whosoever gave a person who fasted water to drink, Allah shall grant him a drink from my fountain such a drink whereafter he shall never feel thirsty until he enters Paradise.” (Reported from Ibn Khuzaimah in his Sahiih and Baihaqii).

The Conditions of 'Laa ilaaha illallaah, Muhammadun Rasoolullaah' - Part 2

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

ACCEPTANCE - QUBOOL

The recognition that Islaam is the Truth must be fulfilled with acceptance against false pride, arrogance and disdainfulness. Adherence to the Qur'aan and the authentic Sunnah (way of the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) liberates the believer from blind imitation and secures for him the right approach to understand Islaam.
"And similarly, We sent not a warner before you (O Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) to any town (people) but the luxurious ones among them said: "We found our fathers following a certain way and religion, and we will indeed follow their footsteps." (The warner) said: "Even if I bring you better guidance than that which you found your fathers following?" They said: "Verily, We disbelieve in that with which you have been sent." So We took revenge of them, then see what was the end of those who denied (Islaamic Monotheism)." {43:23-25}

This can only be achieved by the Mercy of Allaah and through following the example set by those whom Allaah is pleased with amongst the Sahaabah (Companions of the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) and the Salaf-us-Saalih (the righteous Predecessors who followed their footsteps).

These are the conditions of laa ilaaha illallaah. As for the second part of the declaration, 'Muhammadun Rasoolullaah', then this testimony carries with it the following two implications;

WHATEVER ALLAAH, SUBHAANAHU WA TA'AALAA, HAS INFORMED US ABOUT HIS PROPHET, SALLALLAAHU 'ALAYHI WASALLAM, IN THE QUR'AAN IS TRUE

"O Prophet (Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam)! Verily, We have sent you as witness, and a bearer of glad tidings, and a warner, And as one who invites to Allaah [Islaamic Monotheism, i.e. to worship none but Allaah (Alone)] by His Leave, and as a lamp spreading light (through your instructions from the Qur'aan and the Sunnah.)" {33:45-46}

"Say (O Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam): "I am only a man like you. It has been inspired to me that your Ilaah (God) is One Ilaah (God i.e. Allaah). So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord." {18:110}

"Say (O Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam): "I possess no power of benefit or hurt to myself except as Allaah wills. If I had the knowledge of the Ghayb (Unseen), I should have secured for myself an abundance of wealth, and no evil should have touched me. I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings unto people who believe." {7:188}

"Is it wonder for mankind that We have sent Our Inspiration to a man from among themselves (i.e. Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) (saying): "Warn mankind (of the coming torment in Hell), and give good news to those who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah and in His Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) that they shall have with their Lord the rewards of their good deeds" (But) the disbelievers say: "This is indeed an evident sorcerer (i.e. Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam and the Qur'aan!" {10:2}

THE ONLY WAY TO WORSHIP ALLAAH IS THROUGH THE GUIDANCE AND EXAMPLE SET BY MUHAMMAD, SALLALLAAHU 'ALAYHI WASALLAM
The Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, is safeguarded by the One above the seven heavens, just as He has assured that the Qur'aan is safeguarded by Him;
"Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (the Remembrance i.e. the Qur'aan) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption)." {15:9}

The Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, was inspired by revelation and never did he utter a word from his desires. Allaah tells us in the Qur'aan;
"Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only an Inspiration that is inspired." {53:3-4}

Therefore, all his actions, sayings, advice, orders, prohibitions etc. all constitute part of the revelation from Allaah which complete the religion of Islaam. Obedience to him is obedience to Allaah so his Sunnah should not be met with any resistance.
"He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam), has indeed obeyed Allaah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) as a watcher over them." {4:80}

"Whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it), and fear Allaah." {59:7}

"And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements, etc.) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant, etc.) befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them." {24:63}

"But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission." {4:65}

It is through his, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, example that we will gain the love of Allaah, subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa;

"Say (O Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam to mankind): "If you (really) love Allaah then follow me (i.e. accept Islaamic Monotheism, follow the Qur'aan and the Sunnah), Allaah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." {3:31}

Footnotes:
[1] Along with the acceptance of the second part of the Shahaadah (Muhammadun Rasoolullaah).

[2] This is referring to the Hadeeth of 'Abdullaah ibn 'Umar, radhiyallaahu Ta'aala 'anhu, in which he narrates that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, said;
"I have been ordered to fight against people until they testify that there is no God worthy of being worshipped but Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah and until they perform the prayers and pay the Zakaah, and if they do so, they will have gained protection from me for their lives and property unless (they do acts that are punishable) in accordance with Islaam, and their reckoning will be with Allaah, the Exalted."
{Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, no.33}

[3] Tayseerul-Ilaah bi-Sharhi adillati shurooti laa ilaaha illallaah (Facilitation by Allaah in explaining the evidences of the conditions of laa ilaaha illallaah) by Shaykh 'Ubayd ibn 'Abdullaah al-Jaabiri. Narrated by Imaam al-Bukhaaree in his Saheeh under the chapter 'Whoever's last words are laa ilaaha illallaah'.

[4] Some of the 'ulamaa, such as Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez ibn Baaz, add an eighth condition that all other deities worshipped besides Allaah must be rejected.

[5] It is reported on the authority of Anas b. Malik that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, said: "None of you is a believer till I am dearer to him than his child, his father and the whole of mankind." {Saheeh Muslim, no.71}

[6] al-Walaa is defined as the allegiance to Allaah and His Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, and it implies that the believer is loyal and loves for the sake of Allaah. Al-Baraa, on the other hand, is defined as disavowal and it implies that the believer has enmity for the enemies of Allaah and His Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, and that he hates purely for His sake not for his own personal desires.

[7] Shaykh 'Abdur-rahmaan as-Sa'dee, rahimahullaah, said in al-Qawlus-Sadeed (pp.161-163) in his explanation to the verse of the Qur'aan;

"So call upon Him by them."{7:180};

'The foundation of Tawheed is affirming whatever Allaah affirmed for Himself or whatever His Messenger affirmed for Him, as regards His beautiful Names; being aware of what they encompass as regards their majestic and beautiful meanings, worshipping Allaah by them and calling upon Him with them. So everything that the worshipper seeks from his Lord - whether regarding his worldly or religious affairs - then he seeks it by calling upon Him with an appropriate Name from amongst the beautiful Names of Allaah. So whoever calls upon Him requiring provisions and sustenance, should ask Him by His Name ar-Razzaaq (the Provider). Whoever requires mercy and forgiveness [should call upon Him with His Name] ar-Rahmaan (the Most Merciful), ar-Raheem (the Bestower of Mercy), al-Birr (the Most Kind), al-Kareem (the Most Generous), al-'Afuww (the Pardoner), al-Ghafoor (the oft-Forgiving), at-Tawwaab (the One who accepts repentance), and their like. What is better than this is that calling upon Him by His Names and Attributes is an act of worship providing that the meanings of His beautiful Names are acquired by the hearts, such that hearts are affected by what they signify and are filled with this awareness. So, for example, the Names [signifying] greatness, pride, magnificence and dread, should fill hearts with awe of Allaah and reverence to Him. The Names [signifying] beauty, goodness, kindness, compassion and munificence should fill the heart with love of Allaah, a yearning for Him, praise of Him and gratitude to Him. The Names [signifying] might, wisdom, knowledge and power should fill the heart with submissiveness to Allaah, fear of Him and humility to Him. The Names that [signify] knowledge, being informed, omnipresence, watchfulness and witnessing, should fill the heart with an awareness that Allaah watches over every movement and moment of stillness, and thus makes one guard against having evil thoughts and corrupt intentions. The Names signifying self-sufficiency, richness and beneficence should fill the heart with a realisation of being dependant and in great need of Him, turning to Him at all times and under all circumstances.' {Translation taken from 'The declaration of Faith' by Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan.}

The Conditions of 'Laa ilaaha illallaah, Muhammadun Rasoolullaah' - Part 1

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Laa ilaaha illallaah ('There is no deity worth of being worshipped Except Allaah) is known as the first part of the Shahaadah (The Testification of Faith). It is the first principle in the belief in Tawheed (The Oneness of Allaah) and through its acceptance [1]; a person enters the fold of Islaam and his blood, wealth and property become sacred [2]. This declaration is the key to Allaah's Jannah (Paradise) and it has certain conditions which must be met in order for the gates of Jannah to be opened, as attested to by Wahb ibn Munabbih. When he used to be asked by the people, 'Is not laa ilaaha illallaah the key to al-Jannah?' He replied: 'Yes but each key must have teeth. If you come with that which has the right set of teeth, it will open for you, otherwise it will not open." [3]

The 'Ulamaa (Scholars of Islaam) have deduced from the texts of the Qur'aan and Authentic Sunnah, seven conditions of laa ilaaha illallaah [4]. They are;

KNOWLEDGE - 'ILM

Allaah, subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa, says in Soorah Muhammad;
"So know (O Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) that laa ilaaha illallaah (None has the right to be worshipped but Allaah)" {47:19}

And the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, said;
"He who dies knowing that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allaah will enter Jannah." {Saheeh Muslim, no.39}

This necessitates that one must have knowledge of this declaration and understand its meaning, its pillars, and implications so that he may know what is required of him and thus benefit by it. It also necessitates knowledge of Allaah, His attributes, His actions, His commandments and prohibitions as well as the correct manner in which to worship Him. It negates ignorance and encompasses man's purpose of creation. The highest form of knowledge is that which leads to the complete dissociation from false deities and the complete devotion of intentions to Allaah alone.

CERTAINTY - YAQEEN

The statement of laa ilaaha illallaah must be uttered with complete certainty and free from any forms of suspicion or doubt regarding its meaning. This condition is mentioned in His saying;
"Only those are the believers who have believed in Allaah and His Messenger and afterward doubt not" {49:15}

And the Hadeeth of the Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam;
"I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of being worshipped except Allaah and I am His Messenger. The slave of Allaah who would meet Him without harbouring any doubts about this will enter Jannah." {Saheeh Muslim in Kitaabul-Eemaan, 1/41-42}

PURITY OF WORSHIP - IKHLAAS

This condition negates shirk (the association of partners with Allaah). It calls for the acceptance of Islaam with a pure intention and for the performance of all actions sincerely for His sake.
"Say (O Muhammad , sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) "Allaah Alone I worship by doing religious deeds sincerely for His sake only and not to show-off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship" {39:14}

He who testifies to this declaration with a corrupt intention, or having accepted Islaam, performs a deed in which he seeks some worldly gain has failed to meet this condition. The deed will be rejected and Allaah's anger would be upon him.

TRUTHFULNESS - SIDQ

Truthfulness paves the way for a meaningful understanding of laa ilaaha illallaah as it strengthens the believers drive towards achieving knowledge of his Creator. In addition, the truthful believer will grow in love for Allaah and as a consequence, his heart will become sincere.
"Truly, in the body there is a flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt, and behold, it is the heart." {Saheeh Muslim, no.3882}

In contrast, the heart of the hypocrite is filled with desires and diseases due to the falsehood accompanying their testimony. Allaah says about them;
"They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts." {48:11}

LOVE - MAHABBAH

This love is composed of three elements;

* That the believer loves Allaah and His Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, more than anyone else including his own self [5],
* That the believer loves what Allaah and His Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, love
* And finally, that the believer hates what Allaah and His Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, hate.

This is the true meaning of love in Islaam and these three elements form the foundations behind the concept of al-walaa wal-baraa [6]. It is not enough to simply claim that one possesses this love. Rather, it must be translated into actions through the limbs by following the commands of Allaah and Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam. As a consequence of this condition, the one who truly loves Allaah and His Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam, will love His deen (religion) and his heart wil be grieved at the actions of the innovators who attempt to corrupt the religion's pure teachings by introducing foreign beliefs into it. Thus, this condition necessitates the negation of following any of the innovators.
It is reported on the authority of Anas that the Prophet of Allaah (may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: There are three qualities for which anyone who is characterised by them will relish the sweetness of faith: he to whom Allaah and His Messenger are dearer than all else; he who loves a man for Allaah's sake alone; and he who has as great an abhorrence of returning to unbelief after Allaah has rescued him from it as he has of being cast into Hell. {Saheeh Muslim, no.67}

Love of Allaah grows in the heart of the believer as his knowledge of Allaah increases. It is only through knowing the object of love that love can be strengthened and the soul freed from the attachment to this temporal world. There are many ways to know Allaah, through reflecting over His creation and the manifest signs both in the universe and within the verses of the Qur'aan. One of the most effective ways is through studying the Names and Attributes of Allaah. [7]

SUBMISSION - INQIYAAD

The opposite which is eliminated by this condition is rejection. This is fulfilled by obeying Allaah and His Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam and safeguarding against that which they have forbidden. They should be obeyed without hesitation or unease, nor should their decrees be evaluated or reasoned. Rather, the true believer submits to the commandents whole-heartedly and is happy doing so, as Allaah mentions in His saying;
"It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allaah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allaah and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed in a plain error." {33:36}

And also in His saying;
"Whoever submits his whole self to Allaah, while he is doing good (i.e. obeys Allaah in all respects) has indeed grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold." {31:22}

Allaah is Our Creator and He alone is perfect in His Knowledge and Wisdom. Thus, He knows that which will benefit man and that which will cause him harm. Therefore, whatever has been sent down in the revelation of commandments and prohibitions, is for guiding the creation to the path of good in this life and the Hereafter. So it is in man's best interest to submit to these commands, to obey them and not to go against them.

Punishments for Women!

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Hazrat Ali Radi Allahu anhu said that once he and Bibi Fatima Radi Allahu anha went to visit Rasoolallah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam.

Rasoolallah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam was weeping. They inquired the reason that had made them Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallamweep. He Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam replied:

"On the night of the Ascension (Miraaj Shareef), I saw the punishments being given to some women, today I was remembering those scenes. This is why I am worried". They Radi Allahu anhu asked, "Please tell us what did you see?" He Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam replied:

"I saw a woman hanging by her hair and her brain was boiling. (This was the punishment of that woman who did not hide her hair by covering her head from men). I saw one woman hanging by her tongue with her hands tied against her back.

(She used to hurt her husband's feelings by her tongue i.e. speaking). I saw one woman with both her hands and feet tied towards her forehead; and snakes and scorpions were attacking her. (She used to go out of her house without the permission of her husband and she did not clean up herself properly by taking a shower after menses and child birth bleeding).

(Those women who use nail polish should learn a lesson from this. Keep in mind! Nail polish sticks to the surface of the nail hence, ablution and bath is not made.)

One woman was eating her own flesh and there was fire burning under her. (She used to dress up and apply make-up in order to attract attention of males and she used to speak bad about people behind their backs). One woman was seen having her body being cut by a scissor made out of fire.

(This was the punishment for showing her body and private parts to other men). One woman had a face of pig and the body of a donkey, and she was being punished in different styles. (She used to tell lies and make false accusations). There was a woman who looked like a dog, snakes and scorpions were entering into her front-side and coming out from her backside. And angels were hitting her with a hammer made up of fire. (She used to have an attitude problem towards her husband).

Have You Given This A Thought?

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

have you ever stopped & pondered on your life?
maybe at the end of the day?
or maybe at the end of the week?
do you forget that we're only here temporarily?
that this is all just like a dream?
that we will wake up at the end to the "real" world?

“Fear Allah Wherever You Are”

Abû Dharr al-Ghifârî and Mu`âdh b, Jabal relate that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Fear Allah wherever you are. Follow up a bad deed with a good deed and it will blot it out. And deal with people in a good manner.” [ Sunan al-Tirmidhî ]

The importance of this hadith:

Ibn Rajab says: “This is powerful advice, bringing together the rights of Allah and the rights of His servants.”

The fear of Allah

The Arabic word for the “fear of Allah” is taqwâ . It comes from the root word meaning “to protect from something, to prevent”. Indeed, a person exhibits the fear of Allah by seeking to prevent Allah's punishment by carrying out what Allah has commanded of him and abstaining from what Allah has prohibited him.

Allah had called upon all people in every era to fear Him. Allah says: “And We had enjoined upon those who were given the Scripture before – as well as yourselves – to fear Allah.” [ Sûrah al-Nisâ' : 131]

It is Allah's right over His servants that they fear Him as He ought to be feared. Allah says: “O you who believe! Fear Allah as He ought to be feared and do not die except as believers.” [ Sûrah Âl `Imrân : 102]

Ibn Mas`ûd explained what it means to fear Allah as He ought to be feared by saying: “It means that He is to be obeyed not disobeyed, remembered not forgotten, and shown gratitude not ingratitude.”

The fear of Allah is the path to forgiveness, salvation, and the attainment of Allah's mercy. Allah says:

“Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who do good.” [ Sûrah al-Nahl : 128]

“And My mercy encompasses all things, and I shall decree it for those who fear Me.” [ Sûrah al-A`râf : 156]

“He is worthy of being feared and worthy of granting forgiveness.” [ Sûrah al-Muddaththir : 56]

“And whoever fears Allah – He will pardon him his sins and grant him a great reward.” [ Sûrah al-Talâq : 5]

“Indeed, those who fear Allah will be among gardens and rivers, in a seat of truth near an All-Powerful Sovereign.” [ Sûrah al-Qamar : 54-55]

Allah promises those who fear Him that He will provide for their needs and grant them a way out of their worldly difficulties. Allah says: “And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out, and provide for him from whence he could never imagine.” [ Sûrah al-Talâq : 2-3]

This is Allah's promise. We should draw strength from it when we are tried in life with difficulties that tempt us to resort to what Allah has forbidden.

The relationship between knowledge and the fear of Allah

Allah says: “It is only those who have knowledge among Allah's servants who fear Him.” [ Sûrah Fâtir : 28]

There are two ways in which knowledge and the fear of Allah are related. The first is that true fear of Allah comes about as the result of having proper knowledge of Allah and His perfect attributes.

Ibn `Abbâs said about this verse: “They are those who know that Allah is capable of all things.”

He also said: “The verse means: The only people who fear me are those who know my power, my might, and my dominion.”

Ibn Kathîr says in his commentary of this verse: “The only people who fear Allah in the true sense are those who are knowledgeable about Allah. This is because the more knowledge a person has about the Almighty, the All-Powerful and All-Knowing, who possesses the attributes of perfection and the best of names – the more perfect and complete this knowledge is – the greater and more total his fear of Allah will be.” [ Tafsîr Ibn Kathîr ]

The second way that the fear of Allah and knowledge are related stems from the fact that the fear of Allah is to seek to prevent Allah's punishment by carrying out Allah's commands and abstaining from His prohibitions. Consequently, a Muslim needs to have knowledge of these matters in order to fear Allah properly. An ignorant Muslim may have a sense of fear, but he will not be able to fully carry out what that fear requires of him.

Ibn `Abbâs said: “To have knowledge of the Most Merciful is to be someone who associates nothing as a partner with Him, who deems lawful what He has made lawful, who prohibits what He has prohibited, who preserves what He has enjoined upon him, and who has certainty that he shall meet Him and that his actions will be accounted for.”

Follow up a bad deed with a good deed

The Prophet (peace be upon him) tells us that the performing a good deed wipes away the sin incurred from perpetrating an evil one. Scholars have disagreed whether the “good deed” being referred to here refers specifically to the context of repentance or whether it is general for all good works.

The strongest view is that all good deeds can wipe away evil deeds. Allah says: “And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good works do away with evil deeds. That is a reminder for those who take heed.” [ Sûrah Hûd : 114]

A man once came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and informed him that he had contact with a woman like a husband has with his wife, except that he did not go so far as to fornicate with her. This man had just prayed the Fajr prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Have you prayed with us the Fajr prayer?” When he replied that he had, the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited: “Indeed, good works do away with evil deeds.” [ Sahîh al-Bukhârî (526) and Sahîh Muslim (2763)]

However, a believer should always repent for his sins. Allah says: “And those, who when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins – and who forgives sins except Allah – and then do not knowingly persist in what they have done, for them is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they shall abide forever. How great is the reward for those who work righteousness.” [ Sûrah Âl `Imrân : 135]

A believer should follow up his sincere repentance with the performance of good works. This is what Allah wants from us. He says: “Indeed, I am Most Forgiving to whomever repents, believes, and works righteous deeds and then continues upon guidance.” [ Sûrah TâHâ : 82]

Allah also tells us: “Except for those who repent, believe, and work righteous deeds. For those, Allah will change their evil deeds into good deeds, and Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [ Sûrah al-Furqân : 70]

This is especially true for major sins. A Muslim must never leave a major sin to go without repentance, for Allah's promise of forgiveness is for those who turn to Him in sincere repentance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “A servant, if he acknowledges his sin and then repents, Allah will forgive him.” [ Sahîh al-Bukhârî (4141) and Sahîh Muslim (2770)]

And deal with people in a good manner

Allah tells us repeatedly in the Qur'ân to observe good manners in our dealings with others. He says: “Keep to forgiveness (O Muhammad), and enjoin kindness, and turn away from those who are ignorant.” [ Sûrah al-A`râf : 199]

Allah says: “Nor can goodness and evil be equal. Repel (evil) with what is better. Then he between whom and you there had been hatred will become as though he were your dear friend.” [ Sûrah Fussilat : 34]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) is the perfect example of what it means to possess good manners. Allah says, describing him: “Indeed you are of a great moral character.” [ Sûrah al-Qalam : 4]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized how good manners are of paramount importance in Islam when he said: “I was sent only to perfect good manners.” [ Musnad Ahmad (8952)]

Indeed, he tells us that good manners are part of faith. He said: “The believers with the most complete faith are those who have the best manners.” [ Sunan al-Tirmidhî (1162) and Sunan Abî Dâwûd (4682)]

Among the good manners that we should cultivate is to be sensible in our dealings with others and not to react hastily when they do that which displeases us. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Ashajj `Abd Qays: “You possess within yourself two qualities that Allah loves: discernment and forbearance.” [ Sahîh Muslim (17)]

Al-Wahn, A Deadly Disease

On the authority of Thawbaan , the Prophet said:
"The People will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their food." Someone asked, "Will that be because of our small numbers at that time?" He replied, "No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be froth and scum like that carried down by a torrent (of water), and Allah will take the fear of you from the breasts (hearts) of your enemy and cast al-wahn into your hearts." Someone asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is al-wahn?" He replied, "Love of the world and dislike of death."
[An authentic hadith recorded by Abu Dawud and Ahmad]

In attempting to contemplate on the meaning of the Prophet's words in the above hadith (and indeed on any of his noble sayings), one quickly comes to appreciate the Prophet's statement: "I have been given words which are concise, but comprehensive in meaning" [Bukhaari and Muslim]. The Messenger was blessed with the profound ability to utter several words which whole volumes could then be written about.
In this striking hadith, the Prophet describes the situation of the Muslims with great accuracy, and also prescribes a remedy for the ailment.

"The People will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their food."
What is extraordinary in this hadith, is that the Prophet conjures up vivid images in the listener's mind about the scenario. Here, the Ummah (the Muslim nation) is first likened to some seemingly tasty food surrounded by a group of hungry diners. But these people need to share, and thus, the food must be divided into portions corresponding to the status of each 'guest'.

Shortly after the fall of the Khilafah (Caliphate), the Muslim world was divided into many different states by the European powers, with each of them eying the rich resources that Allah has blessed the Muslims with.
Colonization and corruption shortly followed in those lands, and the seeds of tyrannical, despot regimes were planted. Now, with the Ummah divided and each government primarily concerned with its own interests, the enemies of Islam are free to attack each region like wild animals attack their prey - Palestine, Iraq, Chechnya and now Afghanistan.

Someone asked, "Will that be because of our small numbers at that time?" He replied, "No, you will be numerous at that time..."
This is yet more evidence that in Islam, numbers are of little significance. The Muslims were victorious: at the Battle of Badr, where the disbelievers outnumbered the Muslims three to one. They were also victorious at Yarmuk, where the Romans outnumbered the Muslims seventy to one. The current situation is quite the opposite. The Muslim population is more than a billion and is rapidly growing. Yet, these phenomenal numbers are of little consequence when the masses of the population are essentially slaves to the West, herded mindlessly like cattle according to the whims of their masters.

"...but you will be froth and scum like that carried down by a torrent (of water)"
Here is another image! This extraordinary description carries heavy meaning beneath its exterior if one considers the characteristics of the "froth and scum".

Firstly, the froth overlies the water beneath, suggesting a sense of pride and self-confidence. Secondly, the froth is almost weightless and with little substance, such that the slightest breeze can destroy it. Thus, the pride and self-confidence is ill founded and in reality, should not exist. It is only a product of self-delusion. Thirdly, the foam and scum is not in control of its path - that is, the role of the water flowing beneath. All it does is happily flow along to its destination while intoxicated with its imaginary position.

"...and Allah will take the fear of you from the breasts (hearts) of your enemy and cast al-wahn into your hearts."
There were days when the forces of the Muslims were dreaded by all those who opposed them, when people from all over the world would travel to to the lands of the Muslims to receive education, and when Arabic was the language of success. These days are all but gone. Muslims and Islam are generally looked down upon. Why? The Prophet said it is because of Wahn. Technically, it means a dull lifelessness and enervation. However, the Prophet explains what this word really means:
Someone asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is al-wahn?" He replied, "Love of the world and dislike of death."

Thus, the problem and the solution have been identified. After the bombardment from capitalist and socialist ideologies, the Muslim world became too materialistic, desperately pursuing the rewards and pleasures of this world, with little remembrance of the Hereafter. The Prophet said (in another hadith): "Keep much in remembrance of death, which is the destroyer of pleasure." [Tirmidhi]

Allah said: "Say: 'Short is the enjoyment of this world. And the Hereafter is the best for those who do right. And you will never be dealt with unjustly in the very least. Wherever you are, death will find you out, even if you are in towers built up strong and high." [An-Nisaa, 4:77-78]

Imam Ahmad records from Abu Dardaa as saying: "If only you knew what you will certainly see upn your death, you would never eat again a single bite out of a craving appetite, and you would never again drink an extra sip of water for the pleasure of unquenchable and insatiable thirst."

Once Muslims realise that the death is not the end, but the beginning, thereafter with ultimate justice and either excruciating torment or blissful reward, our situation will surely change.

Until then, Allah says: "Verily, Allah will never change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves." [Ar-Ra'd, 13:11]

They Pray & Fast but are Sinful & Say: "Allah is Merciful" - Sheikh Khâlid Husayn

People who commit sinful deeds have many different ways of looking at their sins. When we wish to call them to what is right and have them give up their sinful ways, we must understand their way of thinking and approach them accordingly

One group of people who need a special approach are those primarily young people who appear to exhibit extremely contradictory behavior. On the one hand, they are regular in their prayers, observant of their fasts, and uphold their religious duties admirably. However, when it comes to the sinful and licentious behavior that Allah has forbidden them, they have no qualms about indulging in the most serious of sinful acts. It is not like they fall weak and sin, and then feel bad about it. They show a complete indifference to their bad behavior.

Many people who behave like this, if you ask them why they do so, they turn to you and say: "Allah is forgiving and merciful". They see themselves as religious, and do not realize that their fasts and their prayers do not give them license to indulge in sin. How do we answer such people? Aside from the general prescription that we should call them to the truth with wisdom and beautiful preaching, showing them respect and avoiding harshness – what exactly can we say that will show them the error of their ways?

People who exhibit such behavior are operating under a serious misunderstanding. They misunderstand the verses of the Qur'ân that speak about Allah's mercy. It is their misunderstanding that makes it easy for them to disobey Allah in what He forbids them.

They need to be brought to understand that just like Allah is most forgiving and most merciful, he is also severe in punishment. One of the best verses to call their attention to in this regard is where

Allah says: "Inform My servants that I am the Forgiving and Merciful, and that truly My punishment will be a painful one." [Sûrah al-Hijr: 49-50]

Then, when they justify to us their sinful behavior by saying "Allah is Most Merciful" we can tell them:

"Indeed He is, just as He is the Most Severe in Punishment. Do you have some guarantee that Allah is going to forgive all of your sins?

Know that Allah warns us in the Qur'ân against thinking that we have such a guarantee.

He says: "What! Do they then feel secure from Allah's plan? But none feels secure from Allah's plan except the people who are doomed to fail." [Sûrah al-A`râf: 99]

They need to know that although Allah is Most Merciful, His Mercy is not equally applicable to everyone. Allah says: "My mercy extends to all things, and I shall ordain it for those who do right, and practice regular charity, and those who believe in Our signs." [Sûrah al-A`râf: 156]

Allah's mercy is for those who fear Him. Those who are pious and God-fearing are the one's who will surely benefit from it. The Arabic word for piety – taqwâ – derives from the word wiqâyah, which means "a protective barrier". This is because a pious person is like someone who puts up a barrier between himself and what Allah has prohibited. Such a person fulfills his religious obligations and stays away from religious proscriptions.

As for those who commit major sins and licentious deeds with full abandon, and then brush it off by saying "Allah is merciful." – they are projecting their own wishful thinking onto the meaning of Allah's mercy.

The eminent scholar al-Hasan al-Basrî once commented: "There are some people who project their own hopes upon Allah. They say: 'We merely have a good opinion about Allah.' Though they commit the most atrocious of deeds and eschew noble conduct. If they really had a good opinion about Allah, they would be equally good in their conduct."

These people should take heed of what the Prophet's Companion Ibn Mas`ûd said: "The most wanton person is the one who sees his sins to be like a fly that alights upon his nose that he can just brush away. Would that it were true. The believer, on the other hand, sees his sins to be like a mountain about to fall down on him. Therefore, he is scared and takes stock of himself."

A Muslim should always be in a state of both hope and fear. He should never let his fear overwhelm him and make him despair of Allah's mercy. He should never become so overwhelmed by hope that he disregards the consequences of his bad deeds. He needs to have the hope for Allah's reward and forgiveness that will inspire him to do good and to repent for his sins. He needs to have the fear of Allah's punishment and wrath that will inspire them to shun evil and be conscious of his duties.

The people who use Allah's mercy as an excuse to commit sins should fear being addressed by the following verses of the Qur'ân: "Do those who plan evil (deeds) feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them or that punishment may not overtake them from whence they do not perceive? Or that He will not seize them in their going to and fro so that there be no escape for them?" [Sûrah al-Nahl: 45-46]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned his Companions against committing even the most minor of sins. He said to them: "Avoid even the most trivial of sins, for they can gather up upon a man until they destroy him." [Musnad Ahmad (2808)]

In one narration it is related that the Prophet (peace be upon him) then said: "Indeed, the most trivial sins, when they are taken up by someone, they lead to his ruin." [Musnad Ahmad (22302)]

Trivial sins are those that people generally pay little regard to, so they do not seek to avoid them. However, we are warned that if someone commits them excessively, they will be his ruin. How, then, should we think the effects will be of trivializing major sins? We ask Allah to protect us and guide us.

Reminder To Fast

This is a reminder to all my Muslim brothers & sisters to fast the day of Arafah (this Sunday Dec 7th, according to Makkah's date).

It was reported from Abu Qutaadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and prayer of Allah be upon him) was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafah. He said, "It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year." Collected by Muslim.

No People Introduce A Bid'ah But.. (taken with permission from a dear sister)

I remember, last year during Hajj, I met an Arab sister. She happened to be in the same camp as I was, during our stay in Mina, and as Hajj was ending, we were sad to see each other go. Going through the Hajj rituals had brought us close together. Just as we were about to part and go our ways, she said to me "La ilaaha illAllaah", and waited expectantly for me to reply.

I looked at her..... and I was quiet.

Although, I loved her for the sake of Allaah, I could not reply back.

How could I? I loved her for the sake of Allaah and so I had to tell her.

I told her as gently as I could.....

"Dear sister, what you said and what I am supposed to say back to you is not from the Sunnah of Rasullaah (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam)."

She was aghast. "What! How could you not reply to me!" she said. She was very upset and informed me that we will not be able to meet each other again, here in the dunya or in Jannah if I dont respond by saying, "Muhammad ur Rasullah", back to her.

When I remained quiet, she left.....without even saying "As Salaamu Alaikum" to me.......the REAL greeting of the people of Jannah!

We live in difficult times. Times when a lot of bidah (innovation) has crept into the pure, perfect Shareeah that Muhammad (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) came with. And one such bidah that has spread like wild fire, especially among my Arab brothers and sisters, is saying "La ilaaha illAllaah" when parting with each other.

When two people are parting from one another, the last thing they say before parting is "La ilaaha illAllaah" and the other says "Muhammad ur Rasullah", to complete the sentence. And, their saying this, they believe, will ensure that they will meet each other again, in this world and in Jannah...... ..something that will bring them goodness and 'Khair'..... kind of like a 'good luck charm'. Some of them even think it is part of the deen of Islaam.

And, it is of UTMOST importance, they believe, that you have to reply back. If someone says "La ilaaha illAllaah" at the time of parting and if you don't reply Muhammadur Rasullah", it is as if you are bringing on the wrath of Allah! Or some great evil is about to befall you, or that you will never meet again. Like I said......kind of like a 'good luck charm'.

This bidah has become SO rampant that yesterday, I even noticed a Spanish REVERT sister, who has just recently accepted Islaam, talking to someone on the phone and just as she was hanging up, the last thing she said was, "La ilaaha illAllaah" and, back came the reply, "Muhammadur Rasullah".

In fact, it was this incidence yesterday that prompted me to write about this topic today.

Where did she learn that? Who taught her this bidah?

Which Ayah of the Qu'aan or books of Hadeeth did she learn this from?

Obviously, it was from people..... Muslims, who dont know any better, who think this is part of our deen or a matter of earning rewards, or even something that decides your Qadar' that decides whom you will meet and not meet, to say this 'Kalimah' at the time of parting.

Why is it wrong?

Obviously the statement "La ilaaha illAllaah Muhammadur Rasullah", is the BEST statement a person can make.......EVER.

In fact, this statement marks the difference between Imaan and Kufr, between Jannah and Jahannum.

Then why is it so wrong to say it when parting from one another??

When someone asked the knowledgeable Shaykh Saleh al-Munajjid about this matter, here is what he said:

"Firstly, there is no hadeeth which speaks of this dhikr when parting or concluding a gathering. Hence persisting in it or believing it to be a dhikr that is prescribed on such occasions is a bidah that is to be rejected, because the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: Whoever does any action that is not in accordance with our affair will have it rejected. (Muslim).

The scholars have stated that singling out a particular time or place for an act of worship, or a particular manner in which it is to be done, with no proof from the texts, makes it a kind of bidah and innovation, in which case it is called bidah idaafiyyah. It is prescribed in principle, but is REJECTED because of the manner in which it is done. Acts of worship must be prescribed in and of themselves, the manner in which they are done, the time at which they are done and the number of times they are done, because Allah can only be worshiped in the ways that He has prescribed in His Book or on the lips of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." (www.islamqa. com -- See question # 83092)

So what is from the Sunnah?

1) The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to say, when he wanted to leave a gathering:

Subhaanaka Allaahumma wa bi hamdika, ashhadu an laa ilaaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilayk

(Glory and praise be to You, O Allaah, I bear witness that there is no god but You, I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You).

And he said: It is expiation for whatever happened in that gathering. (Abu Dawood--Saheeh).

2) Recite Soorat al-Asr, because the Sahaabi Abu Madeenah al-Daarimi said: "When two men of the companions of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) met, they would not part until one of them recited By Al-Asr (the time), Verily, man is in loss [al-Asr] over the other, then one would say salaam to the other." (al-Tabaraani- - saheeh)

3) Saying Assalaamu Alaikum to each other is the best greeting to meet as well as to part. It is a dua to your loved one , the greeting of the people of Jannah and the greeting that Allaah Himself chose for the believers. What else can be better than that??

So next time when parting from your friends, hanging up your phone calls, dropping the kids off to school or getting up from a gathering, instead of saying something that is not prescribed in Islaam, say the above duas that are proven from the Sunnah and earn rewards from Allaah, al-Kareem.

And besides, if you think about it, can a 'Dhikr' or a 'statement' be the cause of you meeting again and reuniting with your loved ones or is it Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'ala that causes that??

No people introduce a bidah but something equivalent will be taken away from the Sunnah. (Ahmad).

Selflessness Of The Ansar

By Imam Ibn Kathir, Tafsir Ibn Kathir (Abridged), Volume 9

(And there is also a share in this booty) for the poor emigrants, who were expelled from their homes and their property, seeking bounties from Allah and (His) good pleasure, and helping Allah and His Messenger. Such are indeed the truthful.

And (it is also for) those who, before them, had homes and had adopted the faith, love those who emigrate to them, and have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given, and give them preference over themselves even though they were in need of that. And whosoever is saved from his own greed, such are they who will be the successful.

And those who came after them say: "Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful."

Al-Hashr (59):8-10

Allah said,

"...and give them preference over themselves even though they were in need of that." meaning, they preferred giving to the needy rather than attending to their own needs, and began by giving the people before their own selves, even though they too were in need.

An authentic Hadith stated that the Messenger of Allah said, "The best charity is that given when one is in need and struggling." This exalted rank is better than the rank of those whom Allah described in His statements, "And they give food, inspite of their love for it." (76:8), and, "And gives his wealth, in spite of love for it." (2:177) The latter give charity even though they love the wealth they give, not that they really need it, nor that it is necessary for them to keep it. The former prefer others to themselves even though they are in need and have a necessity for what they spend in charity.

Abu Bakr As-Siddiq gave away all his wealth in charity and Allah's Messenger asked him, "What did you keep for your family," and he said, "I kept for them Allah and His Messenger.''

`Ikrimah (bin Abi Jahl) and two other wounded fighters were offered water when they were injured during the battle of Al-Yarmuk, and each one of them said that the sip of water should be given to another of the three wounded men. They did so even though they were badly injured and craving water. When the water reached the third man, he and the other two died and none of them drank any of the water! May Allah be pleased with them and make them pleased with Him.

Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Hurayrah said, "A man came to the Prophet and said, `O Allah's Messenger! Poverty has stuck me.' The Prophet sent a messenger to his wives (to bring something for that man to eat) but they said that they had nothing. Then Allah's Messenger said, "Who will invite this person or entertain him as a guest tonight; may Allah grant His mercy to him who does so". An Ansari man said, `I, O Allah's Messenger!' So he took him to his wife and said to her, `Entertain the guest of Allah's Messenger generously.' She said, `By Allah ! We have nothing except the meal for my children.' He said, `Let your children sleep if they ask for supper. Then turn off the lamp and we go to bed tonight while hungry.' She did what he asked her to do. In the morning the Ansari went to Allah's Messenger who said, "Allah wondered (favorably) or laughed at the action of so-and-so and his wife." Then Allah revealed, 'and they give them preference over themselves even though they were in need of that'. '' Al-Bukhari recorded this Hadith in another part of his Sahih. Muslim, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa'i collected this Hadith. In another narration for this Hadith, the Companion's name was mentioined, it was Abu Talhah Al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him.

Allah said, "And whosoever is saved from his own greed, such are they who will be the successful." indicating that those who are saved from being stingy, then they have earned success and a good achievement.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Jabir bin `Abdullah said that the Messenger of Allah said, "Be on your guard against committing oppression, for oppression is a darkness on the Day of Resurrection. Be on your guard against being stingy, for being stingy is what destroyed those who were before you. It made them shed blood and make lawful what was unlawful for them." Muslim collected this Hadith.

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Al-Aswad bin Hilal said that a man said to `Abdullah (bin Mas`ud),"O Abu `Abdur-Rahman! I fear that I have earned destruction for myself.'' `Abdullah asked him what the matter was and he said, "I hear Allah's saying, 'And whosoever is saved from his own greed, such are they who will be the successful.' and I am somewhat a miser who barely gives away anything.'' `Abdullah said, "That is not the greed Allah mentioned in the Qur'an, which pertains to illegally consuming your brother's wealth. What you have is miserliness, and it is an evil thing indeed to be a miser.''

Knowledge Cannot Be Gained By Resting

By Ahmad as-Swayyan

I once was contemplating the great scientific efforts that the first generations of Muslim ancestors are known for. I was extremely surprised at the strength of memorisation they possessed and at their great ability to retrieve information and derive conclusions.

I started searching for the reasons behind these exceptional abilities. And one important aspect immediately caught my attention: the extreme seriousness they learned and taught with. The student vows himself to learning from a very early age. He has no time for lawful or any other kind of playing. He has no time for life's worries and responsibilities except for what is necessary. He disassociates himself from this life's pleasures, clears his heart from everything worldly and goes wholeheartedly into seeking for knowledge.

If we look in depth into Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal's life, we find the best lessons and examples in it. Imam Ahmad said, "I wanted to go early to study circles. My mother would hold my clothes from me and say, "not until the people wake up and make athan for salah".

Qutaybah ibn Sa'id described Imam Ahmad's sincerity in seeking knowledge. He said, "Ahmad ibn Hanbal used to go with Waki' after they performed salaatul Ishaa at night. He would stand by the door and Waki' would teach him. One night, Waki' stood by the door and said, "O Abu Abdullah, Would you like me to talk to you about Abu Sufyan's speeches?" Ahmad then replied, "Yes, tell me." And they stood, talking, until the servant came and said, "The sun is going to come out soon."

Imam Ahmad's study circles were full of glorification and obedience of Allah, which gave him extra peace and dignity. His student Imam Abu Dawud, who knew him well said, "I met around 200 scholars none of whom were like ibn Hanbal. He was not involved in anything worldly like many others, but if there was discussion about knowledge he spoke".

For this earnestness, the scholars used to value and honour Imam Ahmad. Khalaf ibn Salem said, "We were in Yazeed ibn Harun's gathering and Yazeed joked wih his guests. Ahmad ibn Hanbal cleared his throat. Yazeed hit his forehead with his hand and said, "You should have told me that Ahmad is here, I wouldn't have made the joke".

This desire and endurance in seeking knowledge has made Imam Ahmad one of the best in memorizing the hadith. Imam Abu Zur'ah ar-Razy once told Abdullah ibn Ahmad, "Did you know that your father knew of one million hadith?". "How do you know? Abdullah asked. Abu Zur'ah replied, "I studied with him and counted after him."

When we look at the first generations of our scholars we find many similar examples. But let us contemplate our current situation in seeking knowledge. It makes one amazed. It is like sliding down from the top of a high mountain to the bottom of a deep valley. Look here and there. Do you see anything resembling or coming close to those giants? What are the worries and hopes of today's students? How many things have we been lenient about - until leniency became our trait?

Who has the patience and endurance to study and research and hunt in the books without stopping or becoming bored? Who has the patience and ability to stay up long nights thinking and deriving?

Knowledge is a vast sea with spaced out boundaries and deep bottoms. Only the powerful can sail through it. A person will not reach its concealed pearls and hidden treasures before, first, standing on its nearby shore. Yahya ibn Abi Katheer was right in saying, "Knowledge cannot be gained by resting."

(the interpretation of the meaning)

Surah Al 'Asr
(Time Through The Ages)
103:1-3

By (the Token of)
Time (through the Ages),

Verily Man
Is in loss,

Except such as have Faith
And do righteous deeds,
In the mutual teaching

Patience and Constancy.

There is a Bank that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day.

What would you do?
Draw out ALL of it, of course!!!!

Each of us has such a Bank.
Its name is TIME.
Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds.
Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose.
It carries over no balance.
It allows no overdraft.

Each day it opens a new account for you.
Each night it burns the remains of the day.
If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours.

There is no going back.
There is no drawing against the "tomorrow."
You must live in the present on today's deposits.
Invest it carefully with wisdom and knowledge.

Use your Time to pray sincerely and do good and charity;
To faithfully practice the Five Pillars and perfect your Deen.
To remember to thank Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala for everything;
To adhere to the commandments of the Holy Qur'aan and the teachings of the Sunnah of the Prophet Sall Allaahu alayhi wa sallam.
In order that you may benefit the utmost in blessings and guidance in your life living with strength of eemaan and taqwaa ~
Seeking only the Pleasure of Allaah Ta'aala for the sake of your Hereafter.

The clock is running.
Make the most of each day.

Start working on your 'Time'

We should not neglect our Time or use it haphazardly; on the contrary we should bring ourselves to account, structure our litanies and other practices during each day and night, and assign to each period a fixed and specific function for self-development in our Deen and maximise its potential. The better route towards self-development is, of course, to integrate all our efforts into a structured daily life.

Acquisitiveness, that is, the passion for seeking an increase in wealth, position, the number of adherents or followers or supporters, mass production and mass organisation, may affect an ndividual as such, or it may affect whole societies or nations. Other people's example or rivalry in such things may aggravate the situation. Up to a certain point it may be good and necessary. But when it becomes inordinate and monopolises attention, it leaves no Time for higher things in life, and a clear warning is here sounded from a spiritual point of view. Man may be engrossed and wastes Time in these things till death approaches, and he looks back on a wasted life, as far as the higher things are concerned.

In other words, if life be considered under the metaphor of a business bargain, man, by merely attending to his material gains, will lose. When he makes up his day's account in the afternoon, it will show a loss. It will only show a profit if he has Faith, leads a good life, and contributes to social welfare by directing and encouraging other people on the Path of Truth and Constancy. Faith is his armour, which wards off the wounds of the material world; and his righteous life is
his positive contribution to spiritual ascent. Also, if man lived only for himself, he would not fulfill his whole duty. Whatever good he has, especially in moral and spiritual life, he must spread among his brethen, so that they may see the Truth and stand by in patient hope and unshaken constancy amidst all the storm and stress of outer life. For he and they will then have attained Peace within.

Is Allah Pleased with Me? by Sheikh Sâlih al-Zahrânî

It should be known that obedience to Allah is one of the chief reasons for attaining Allah’s pleasure, while disobedience to Him is a reason for being subject to His wrath. This point is emphasized repeatedly in the Qur’ân and Sunnah.

Allah says: “And He is pleased with Islam for you as a religion.” [Sûrah al-Mâ’idah: 3]

He says: “And He is not pleased with ingratitude in His servants; and if you are grateful, He is pleased with this in you.” [Sûrah al-Zumar: 7]

Allah is pleased with those who are truthful. Allah says: “Allah will say: This is the day when their truth shall benefit the truthful ones; they shall have gardens beneath which rivers flow to abide therein for ever: Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Allah; this is the mighty achievement.” [Sûrah al-Mâ’idah: 119]

He is pleased with the believers. Allah says: “Their reward with their Lord is gardens of perpetuity beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein for ever; Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Him; that is for those who fear their Lord.” [Sûrah al-Bayyinah: 8].

Allah is pleased with the soul that is firm on faith. Such a soul will be addressed in the Hereafter by the words: “Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (to Him)” [Sûrah al-Fajr: 28]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Allah’s being pleased is in the parent’s pleasure, and His displeasure is in the parent’s displeasure.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî (1899)]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said about the person being pleased with Allah’s decree: “Whoever is pleased, He will be pleased with him; and whoever is displeased, His displeasure will be upon him.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî (2396)]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: “The mostly hated among men to Allah is the one who is severe, facing others with enmity.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (2457) and Sahîh Muslim (2668)]

Allah is pleased with belief, with Islam, and with our acts of obedience. He likes the believers who obey Him and is pleased with them.

Allah hates and condemns unbelief, hypocrisy and all other forms of disobedience. He is displeased with the unbelievers and hypocrites in all of their guises.

This is the overarching principle with respect to Allah being pleased or displeased with us. However, we should not think it is easy to use this principle to make assessments about actual people.

We cannot describe an individual by saying that Allah is pleased with him or displeased with him on the basis of our assessment of that person’s obedience or disobedience. Such a statement cannot be made about someone without direct evidence from the Islamic sources. By making such an audacious statement about someone without direct evidence from the Qur’ân and Sunnah, we are making a claim about the Unseen and giving a ruling from ourselves that is only for Allah to give.

A person may do what appears to the people to be good, but he may face an evil end. In this case Allah is not pleased with him. Another person may do what appears to the people to be evil, but he may face a good end. Then Allah will be pleased with him.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “By Him besides whom there is no god, one of you will act like the people of Paradise until between him and Paradise there remains but the distance of a cubit, when what is written overtakes him and he begins to act like the denizens of Hell and thus enters Hell. And another amongst will act in the way of the denizens of Hell, until there remains between him and Hell a distance of a cubit, then what is written overtakes him and then he begins to act like the people of Paradise and enters Paradise.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (3208) and Sahîh Muslim (2643)]

We cannot make any declaration about the fate of someone in particular. However, we hope for the person whom we see performing good deeds and obeying Allah that Allah is pleased with him. Likewise, we fear for the person whom we see committing evil deeds and acts of disobedience that he is earning Allah’s displeasure.

It is worth saying that works alone are not sufficient to earn Allah’s pleasure. Works need to be accompanied by true belief and faith in Allah.

Allah says about the deeds of the unbelievers: “And We shall turn to whatever deeds they did (in the worldly life), and We shall make such deeds as floating dust scattered about.” [Sûrah al-Furqân: 23]

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about one of the polytheists who died on unbelief, whether or not his good deeds and the help he gave to poor and needy will be of any benefit to him before Allah, he replied: “No. He had never said ‘Allah is my Lord’.”

A person should never be proud of his acts and think that Allah is pleased with him and has accepted his good deeds. Our deeds are assessed in the final outcome.

The Pious Predecessors used to fear that Allah would be displeased with them and would not accept their good works. One of them said: “If Allah accepts my work, I would like to die, because Allah says: ‘Allah only accepts from those who guard (against evil)’.” (The verse he quoted was to Sûrah al-Mâ’idah: 27.)

Likewise, we should not give a decision on behalf of Allah and decide for ourselves that Allah is displeased with a particular person or that He will not forgive that person.

The exception to this is where we have direct textual evidence attesting to Allah’s pleasure or displeasure at a certain individual.

For instance, we have clear evidence that Allah is pleased with the Companions. Allah says: “And (as for) the foremost, the first of the Muhâjirîn and the Ansâr, and those who followed them in goodness, Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide in them for ever; that is the mighty achievement.” [Sûrah al-Tawbah: 100]

The same applies particularly to the Companions who participated in the oath of Ridwân under the tree at Hudaybiyah. Allah says: “Certainly Allah was well pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance to you under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility on them and rewarded them with a near victory.” [Sûrah al-Fath: 18]

Allah declares that he is pleased with His Prophet Ishmael (peace be upon him). Allah says: “And he enjoined on his family prayer and almsgiving, and was one in whom his Lord was well pleased” [Sûrah Maryam: 55]

And some of those whom Allah is displeased with and whom He has openly cursed are: Satan, Pharaoh, Hâmân, Qârûn and Abû Lahab.

We ask refuge with Allah from displeasing Him and beseech Him to guide us aright and bless us to attain his pleasure.
